eBay Top Rated Seller Requirements Explained (and How to Get There)
eBay sorts every seller into one of three levels: Top Rated, Above Standard or Below Standard. Your level affects your fees, how often your listings appear in search and whether buyers see the Top Rated Plus badge. Here is how the system works and what you can do to climb it.
How eBay evaluates sellers
eBay reviews your performance every month in Seller Hub under Performance → Service metrics and Seller level. The main measures are:
- Transaction defect rate: transactions with a seller-cancelled order because the item was out of stock, or a case closed without seller resolution.
- Cases closed without seller resolution: “item not received” or “not as described” cases that eBay had to step in on.
- Late shipment rate: orders shipped after your handling time or delivered after the estimated date.
- Tracking uploaded on time and validated: tracking added within your handling time that the carrier confirms.
Typical Top Rated requirements
For eBay.com, Top Rated sellers usually need an account open for at least 90 days, a minimum number of transactions and sales over the past 12 months, and very low defect, case and late-shipment rates (well under 1%, and a few percent for late shipments). Thresholds differ between eBay.com, eBay.co.uk and eBay.com.au and are updated from time to time, so check the exact figures in Seller Hub.
Top Rated Plus: the badge buyers notice
Top Rated sellers can earn the Top Rated Plus badge on listings that offer same or one business day handling and free returns within 30 days or more. Qualifying listings get a final value fee discount and tend to perform better in Best Match search.
Five habits that move you up
- Ship inside your handling time, every time. If you cannot ship same day reliably, set a two-day handling time and beat it.
- Upload tracking immediately. On-time tracking that the carrier scans is one of the easiest wins.
- Keep stock counts honest. Cancelling because an item is out of stock counts as a defect.
- Resolve problems before they become cases. Reply to messages quickly and offer a refund or replacement when it is fair.
- Describe items accurately. Good photos and complete item specifics prevent “not as described” cases.
When Below Standard happens
Below Standard sellers pay higher final value fees and lose visibility. The way back is the same list above, applied consistently: eBay looks at a rolling window, so a few clean months make a big difference.
Let us handle the fulfilment side
Shipping inside your handling time and uploading valid tracking are the parts of Top Rated that depend on daily work, and they are what our eBay store management service takes care of. Every order is shipped, tracked with a PREP ID and reported in your portal, for $30 every 30 days.
